BLAIRS CHALET

INTERIOR DESIGN AND STYLING

Redefining the interior of a classic Australian alpine chalet at Dinner Plain.

Constructed in the early 1980s, Blairs is a modest alpine chalet designed by architect McIntyre Partnership as one of the first dwellings of the original masterplan for Dinner Plain Alpine Village, nestled in the extreme climate of the Victorian High Country. Inspired by the rugged charm of old cattlemen's huts, Peter McIntyre envisioned a community that embraced its natural surroundings. McIntyre Partnership brought his vision to life, designing icons like Blairs, one of the original buildings in the alpine village.

Blairs Chalet embodies McIntyre's philosophy of "emotional functionalism," blending natural materials like stone, timber, and corrugated iron. Its focal point, a majestic stone fireplace beneath a soaring Douglas Fir ceiling, exudes rustic elegance. Fast forward 40 years, and Britt White Studio was tasked with revamping Blairs for a skiing enthusiast family, injecting vibrancy and modernity while respecting its heritage.

Inspired by the snow gums surrounding the chalet, our renovation drew upon the hues of nature, infusing the interior with shades of pink, purple, red, grey and green. Existing timber and stone elements formed the foundation, while new textures and colours breathed fresh life into the space. The result? A harmonious blend of tradition and contemporary flair, reflecting the family's love for history and innovation.

Collaborating with local artisans and craftsmen, Britt White Studio reimagined the kitchen and bathroom, refreshed flooring and upholstery, and curated a mix of vintage and modern furniture. The centrepiece, a bold pink kitchen adorned with brass accents, embodies Britt's design ethos: playful, vibrant and full of character.

In essence, Blairs underwent a transformative journey, evolving from a tired relic to a vibrant retreat that pays homage to its past while embracing the future. Through meticulous attention to detail and a keen eye for color and texture, Britt White Studio has redefined Blairs as a contemporary haven that captures the spirit of alpine living.

Britt White Studio is honoured to have been recognised for Blairs Chalet, having been awarded as Winner, KBDi Small Bathrooms, VIC 2023 and receiving a High Commendation, KBDi Bathroom Designer of the Year, VIC 2023.
