GREAT ALPINE HOUSE
A MOUNTAIN RETREAT REIMAGINED
Whole of Home Mid-Century Renovation Framed by Mountain Views.
Great Alpine House began as a quietly dated home set within more than 15 acres of rural landscape in Germantown, Victoria. Built in the 1960s and left untouched for decades, the structure was sound but inward looking, with dark rooms and a closed layout that failed to engage with its remarkable setting.
Justin and Charlotte, owners and residents who have a successful track record in building and developing, approached the project with a clear brief. Create a calm, organised home that felt open, liveable and deeply connected to the surrounding mountains. Britt White Studio led a complete internal reworking, retaining the existing shell while reshaping the interior for contemporary living.
The floor plan was redesigned to open the heart of the home into a connected kitchen, dining and lounge. New windows and doors invite daylight in and frame long views across the landscape, while a stone hearth anchors the living space and creates a natural gathering point. Custom joinery throughout the entry, laundry and main bedroom keeps the home visually quiet and highly functional.
Material choices were guided by the site. Greens, greys, blackened timber and warm oak reference the mountainside, bringing a grounded and organic quality to the interiors. Finishes are tactile yet restrained, allowing the home to feel considered without feeling precious.
The former three-bedroom layout was reworked to create a generous main suite and comfortable guest spaces, supported by fully redesigned bathrooms that balance refinement with durability. Throughout, the focus remained on real living. Spaces are intuitive, ordered and easy to move through, supporting both everyday life and time spent retreating into the landscape.
Great Alpine House now feels open, settled and at ease with its setting. A thoughtful restoration that respects what was there, while creating a warm and enduring home for the way its owners live today.
